After the match, Zwane gave an insight into his reasoning behind leaving Khune out after initial fears that he was carrying an injury.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has explained the omission of veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune from his matchday squad in the side’s 2022/23 DStv Premiership opening loss against Royal AM.
“No, it was because of the selection, obviously [I had to] pick the best available 11 and then we had to take Brandon and Bruce to start. So we (are) creating that competition and Bruce, I think he did fairly well. I think it was just unfortunate that we conceded from that corner because of a lapse (in) concentration,” Zwane told journalists after the game.
In addition, Zwane shared his thoughts on the club’s debutants in Zitha Kwinika, Yusuf Maart, Ashley Du Preez and Siyethemba Sithebe.
“Top class… I’m more than happy, though there is a lot of room for improvement. We still have 29 more games to play, cup games as well. So, I think this is one season that people will get to know us better,” he said.
There’s a quick turnaround for Zwane’s men as Chiefs’ next assignment comes in the form of Maritzburg United who they host at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
