WHAT ZWANE WILL FOCUS ON
Having launched an overhaul that includes the departure of 12 players and the signing of nine, what are the first steps Zwane will take?
It feels like such a long time ago but it was on 26 May when the Glamour Boys called the media to the FNB Stadium for a press conference. It was there the club announced the decision to appoint Arthur Jabulani Zwane as the new head coach.
The Soweto-born coach replaced the departed Scotsman Stuart Baxter who was sacked late last season following a string of poor results.
Well, it is a bit obvious when you look at the players that have been signed. There is a host of midfielders and attackers. In other words, it is the central area and the frontline where Zwane will be spending long nights to form combinations and danger for the opposition.
Amakhosi have signed the dynamic central midfielder that is Yusuf Maart as a marquee signing, while there is also new central players like Siyethemba Sithebe, George Matlou, and Kamohelo Mahlatsi.
Zwane’s immediate task will therefore integrate these players, especially Maart into the team. In fact, the team is expected to be built around Maart and Ashley Du Preez (more on him below).
While the Soweto giants are still searching for more strikers, Ashley Du Preez was one of the first signings of the window.
The former Stellenbosch attacker is reportedly the most expensive purchase of the window with a figure of R10 to R15 million paid for his services.
It is therefore a no-brainer that Zwane will set up his attack to get the best out of the 24-year-old Du Preez. Will Keagan Dolly and Khama Billiat no longer be the main men? Only Zwane knows.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys will begin the new season at the Chatsworth Stadium against Royal AM on Saturday 6 August at 17:30.
